Breaking the Cycle: A Story of Hope

A Story of Hope

For over a decade, we’ve known Phong.

We first met him when he was just 10 or 11, one of the many bright-eyed kids living in an orphanage. Over the years, we watched him grow—curious, full of potential, and navigating childhood as best he could within the limitations of institutional care.

But like so many youth in the orphanage system, Phong eventually aged out. One day, without warning or preparation, he was simply on his own.

No support.

No help.

No guidance.

No family.

It’s a heartbreaking pattern we see all too often. These young adults, still teens in so many ways, are thrust into adulthood with no safety net.

For Phong, that meant homelessness and addiction—not because he lacked potential, but because he lacked people.

But Phong’s story didn’t end there.

Through a connection with one of our PureVN team members in Vietnam, Phong reached out.

When we heard what he had been through, our hearts broke. This was someone we had considered family—now lost, hurting, and alone.

That’s when the healing began.

With the help of PureVN, Phong was able to enter a rehabilitation program and start rebuilding his life. He was surrounded by mentors and a support system that reminded him of his worth, his purpose, and his identity.

We were able to walk with him—helping provide security, stability, and, maybe most importantly, a sense of family.

And today?

Phong is thriving.

He is healthy. Whole. Walking in freedom.

He’s now a part owner of a restaurant called Mana Cake, which officially opened its doors on March 1st.

Even more beautiful is that Phong now serves in the very same rehab facility where he once stayed, giving back to others who are walking the path he once did.

And in the midst of all this restoration, another piece of redemption: Phong is now married, and creating his own family!

The boy who once felt abandoned is now a man with a home, a purpose, and a family of his own.

God has written something beautiful from brokenness and we are so incredibly proud of the man Phong has become.

Phong’s story is a reminder of why we do what we do.

Because no young person should have to figure life out alone.

Because every life is worthy of love, belonging, and a chance to dream again.

Because family changes everything.

At PureVN, we believe that when someone is supported, seen, and truly known—they can break the cycle.
And build something beautiful.
